How American carmakers lost ground in China
  + stars: | 2024-05-11 | by ( Robert Ferris | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
American automakers and their non-Chinese counterparts are fighting an existential battle, as local rivals in China outpace them. GM's sales in China, including those of joint ventures it maintains in the country, have fallen from a high of 4 million vehicles in 2017 to 2.1 million in 2023. Several factors have contributed to the decline of U.S. automakers in China. That's precisely why American automakers shouldn't give up on China despite the U.S. companies' sales setbacks, according to Bill Russo, a former Chrysler executive who runs Automobility, a consulting firm in Shanghai. "If you don't compete in China, then what are you going to do when China shows up in your backyard?"

A Plan to Break up Paramount

Splitting the Paramount empireEver since Sony Pictures Entertainment and Apollo Global Management expressed interest in buying Paramount Global, a big question has loomed over the potential $26 billion deal: What would they do with the company? The answer: Break it up, write The Times’s Ben Mullin and DealBook’s Lauren Hirsch. Sony and Apollo would keep Paramount Pictures. Paramount Pictures would become part of a joint venture controlled by Sony, with Apollo taking a minority stake in the new entity that it could eventually sell to Sony or to another buyer. The venture would also keep Paramount’s library of films and TV shows, as well as the rights to characters like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Reuss also touted the competitiveness of GM's Chinese joint venture partners such as Wuling Motors. GM's market share in China, including its joint ventures, has plummeted from roughly 15% as recently as 2015 to 8.6% last year — the first time it has dropped below 9% since 2003. DETROIT – General Motors believes it can regain market share in China after hitting a roughly 20-year low last year amid changing market conditions and increased domestic competition, GM President Mark Reuss said Thursday. The market declines have spurred questions on whether GM would exit China, as it has other underperforming markets in recent years. The automaker said Steve Hill, currently GM's vice president of global commercial operations, would succeed GM China President Julian Blissett, effective June 1.

Health-tech firm Masimo , facing the imminent threat of litigation and a second proxy contest, offered a settlement to Politan Capital's Quentin Koffey on Thursday that would fill a vacant board seat with one of the activist's proposed directors. The company is trying to spin off its consumer technology division in concert with an unspecified joint-venture partner, CEO Joe Kiani said earlier this year. The settlement offer would not have been possible without the imminent resignation of current director Rolf Classon, whose departure was attributed to "personal health reasons." Koffey waged a successful proxy fight at Masimo last year earning himself and another nominee representation on Masimo's six-person board. Politan launched a second proxy fight to oust Kiani earlier this year, saying that the "absence of oversight has been damaging for shareholders."

Politan Capital's Quentin Koffey sent a letter to Masimo CEO Joe Kiani on Wednesday, demanding information about the health-tech company's proposed spinoff of its consumer business. The purchase was a catalyst for Politan's first proxy fight at the company. Last month, Masimo said it would spin off its consumer business, spurring a rally in the stock. Koffey said in his letter that Masimo management has asked "that directors sign a non-disclosure agreement" to get access to information around the deal. Jeff Zucker’s bid for Tory titan-hood has come to an end. The media executive on Tuesday formally abandoned his attempt to take the reins of London’s Daily Telegraph, bailing out after British political and news leaders balked at Mr. Zucker’s reliance on Emirati financiers to bankroll the effort. Mr. Zucker’s venture company, RedBird IMI, had sought government approval to complete a debt-for-equity deal that would hand it control of The Telegraph and its sister magazine, The Spectator. Because of the withdrawal, other prospective owners may now attempt to purchase the publications. “Our ownership would have seen the strongest editorial protections ever put forward for a U.K. newspaper, along with much-needed investment,” a RedBird IMI spokesperson said in a statement.
